Welcome to Ross Glen School

On the Road to ROSGO . . .

We are excited about learning.

We believe in creating a school culture that is Respectful, Open Hearted and Safe. Learning through a growth mindset is empowering, we want to give students ownership of their own learning journey. Staff at Ross Glen developed a behaviour matrix which we implemented in the 2022-2023 school year. The purpose of this Behaviour Matrix is to identify and display positive behaviours across all school contexts and settings. It is a reference that helps our school community consistently reinforce our set of key behavioural expectations during our students' daily routines. ROSGO is an easy acronym to remember as ROSGO the Road Runner is our school mascot. Each letter stands for a positive behaviour we want the members of the RG community to demonstrate. R- Respect O- Open-Hearted S- Safety G-Growth Mindset O- Ownership We have identified various locations in the school and have explained what the behaviours would look like, sound like and feel like in each one. For example, expected behaviours at lunchtime will be different from the expected behaviours in an active space, like the gym or playground. Staff will hand out ROSGO slips to students to recognize them for their positive behaviours. Each week we make 4 draws, and those students can choose a prize. Students are recognized at the Spirit Day assembly. Ross Glen is an APPLE School! Ross Glen has been an APPLE School since September 2023. Ross Glen Staff work with APPLE Schools to build a healthy community as the organization strives to inspire and empower school communities to be leaders in their journey to health by recommending and supporting evidence-based sustainable changes. APPLE Schools is a program that helps school communities make healthy living a part of everyday life. As an APPLE School, we use a proven approach called Comprehensive School Health (CSH) that empowers students, teachers, and community members to make choices that support health and well-being. Our APPLE School Health Facilitator, Mr. Hyde, is specially trained in nutrition, physical activity, and community involvement. He works closely with everyone in the school community to create an action plan that meets the school's unique needs. Ross Glen's action plan includes 3 areas of focus; healthy eating, physical activity, and mental health. Mr. Hyde plans fun and engaging activities that encourage healthy habits. Students participate in a monthly tast test, participate in home challenges, or join physical activity programs that change throughout the year, such as the run club or soccer program in the fall or the Jays program that runs in the spring - all designed to make healthy living fun and accessible. As an APPLE School, we do also prepare students to be confident leaders who understand the importance of health, empathy, and responsible school behaviours. One example is our older students having the opportunity to be Recess Leaders and teach the younger students various games. APPLE Schools uses data to measure and improve each school's plan yearly. This data comes from student activity trackers, parent surveys, and feedback from focus groups. By tracking these results, APPLE Schools ensures the program remains effective and impactful. APPLE Schools is cpmmitted to preventing chronic illnesses by creating lasting, sustainable changes. This innovative, evidence-based program is unique in Canada and has been recognized by both the Public Health Agency of Canada and the National Cancer Institute for its effectiveness in promoting lifelong health. Ross Glen is 1 of 2 APPLE Schools in Medicine Hat.
